A Plymouth garage is offering free car safety checks for NHS staff and key workers.

Faraday Mill MOT will conduct the check which acts as a pre-MOT looking for dangerous faults such as worn brake pads or a bald tyre which could lead to a £2,500 fine and three points on the driver’s licence if faulty.

Stewart Campbell, director of Faraday Mill MOT, acknowledged that all car users who need their cars for essential shopping, collecting medicines and visiting vulnerable neighbours are important.

However the garage wanted to give priority to those people who are on the frontline, especially NHS staff.

It follows the DVSA’s recent six-month MOT extension which has been rolled out to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Both the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation and the Independent Garage Association, among others, have warned that the majority of consumers do not realise that they are expected to ensure their car is roadworthy.

Stewart said: “I would say probably 60 per cent of cars that come in for their annual MOT already fail on dangerous defects.

“Now with this six month extension it can be dangerous, especially for people who need to be on the roads like the NHS workers, etc.”

Stewart offers a 20-point heck of safety critical items including fluid levels, tyres, brakes and lights.

He added: “We’re offering it free to key workers.

“All courtesy cars are parked up at the moment, I’m not giving them out to reduce the spread.

“We’re going out to the person’s address, we’ll ask them to leave the key in an envelope or in their bin cupboard so it’s contactless.

“I’ve got loads of PPE and we sanitise the car before we work on it.”
