WCFMC data reveals the Audi A3 to consistently be the most expensive to maintain when compared to the top family cars nominated in the What Car? 2017 Awards.

An online marketplace for car servicing and repairs in the UK, WhoCanFixMyCar.com (WCFMC) has revealed the true cost of maintenance for the Audi A3, Vauxhall Astra and Seat Leon.

In the research which analysed more than 43,300 lines of data, the Audi A3 was revealed as the most expensive to maintain.

With an average cost of £207.18 for all service and repair work, the A3 is 11 per cent more expensive to maintain than the Astra (£184.15) and the Leon (£183.60).

The A3 is 9 per cent more expensive than the Leon for brake and exhaust repair and 15 per cent more expensive than the Astra.

When it comes to steering and suspension, the A3 (£204.84) is 16 per cent more expensive than the Leon (£172.80) and a significant 23 per cent more expensive than the Astra (£157.64).

However, the Astra (£164.39) is 17 per cent more expensive than the A3 (£136.86) and 24 per cent more expensive than the Leon (£125.64) for electrical and battery jobs.

The least expensive routine repair or service
  • Astra – servicing and MOT: £130.74
  • A3 – electrical and batteries: £136.86
  • Leon – electrical and batteries: £125.64

The costs of clutch and gearbox repairs for the A3 are just 0.47 per cent more expensive compared to the Astra and for security, locking and keys the A3 is 2.80 per cent more.

The Leon is the cheapest for clutch and gearbox repairs (£423.18) but most expensive for bodywork (£388.22).

When looking at the maintenance costs of each car over a period of time for every category, WCFMC say the A3 is the most expensive to repair and service.

The Leon dips significantly in maintenance costs in its ninth year, while the other two are the most expensive to maintain at this age.

A3 drivers are also having to pay significantly more for bodywork and repairs in the ninth year.

In the report, WCFMC said: “As consistently highlighted across our data sets, the Audi A3 is the most expensive car to maintain compared the Vauxhall Astra and Seat Leon.

“This is a fact made especially interesting when you consider that the A3 won the Best Family Car 2017 in the WhatCar? Awards.”
