Six swimmers have so far raised more than £1,800 in memory of former Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket Division sales manager, Alan Dean, and warehouse worker, Mike Powell, who both lost a battle against cancer.

The charity event was organised by Hereford-based Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket Division operations director, Warren Barnett, and was held at the town’s pool.

Barnett said: “I am a keen swimmer myself and try to go two or three times a week and thought it would be a good idea to put together a team to take part in the Sport Relief Swimathon and to raise money for some fantastic charities in memory of Alan and Mike.”

The swimmers included Warren; his 12-year-old daughter, Harriet; 22-year-old nephew, Matthew Smart; Schaeffler customer services manager, Joanne Loughman and her son Dec, as well as and Olivia Drynda, daughter of Schaeffler customer support employee Amanda Drynda.

Barnett added: “Harriet, Dec and Olivia all achieved personal bests in terms of the distance they swam, which was a great effort.

“Overall we completed 10 kilometres and have raised hundreds of pounds from donations by staff, customers and friends.”

Donations can be made via the ‘Just Giving’ website.
