Gasoline Particulate Filters are used in petrol engines to meet Euro 6c (2017) emissions regulations, reducing particulate emissions from Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines.
The GPF will regenerate more easily than a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), known as passive regeneration mode and is induced naturally when the driver stops accelerating and the temperature of the filter is hot enough.
Gasoline Particulate Filters are effective in reducing emissions but come with several challenges:
- Clogging and Blockages – If the engine doesn’t reach high enough temperatures, soot accumulation can block the filter, affecting performance.
- Regeneration Issues – Passive regeneration depends on exhaust temperatures and driving conditions. Short trips and stop-start driving may prevent effective regeneration.
- Increased Backpressure – A clogged filter can create exhaust backpressure, reducing engine efficiency and power.
- Potential Repair Costs – If clogged, the GPF may require professional cleaning or replacement, increasing drivers’ maintenance and repair costs.
- Maintenance Requirements – Regular fuel system cleaning is needed to prevent incomplete combustion and filter blockages.
