Three men were arrested in east London following a police operation targeting the sale of counterfeit airbags. Officers from the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) seized approximately 500 fake airbags and an estimated £140,000 in cash.
The counterfeit airbags were believed to have been imported from China and sold abroad at prices significantly lower than genuine products. Police suspect that the airbags were offered for sale at prices as low as £25.
The operation involved raids on three properties in east London, where officers discovered the counterfeit airbags and cash hidden in various locations, including a wall cavity and wardrobes.
Three men, aged 34, 36, and 51, were arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and conspiracy to distribute counterfeit goods.
Detective Chief Inspector Emma Warbey of PIPCU emphasised the dangers of purchasing counterfeit airbags, which can compromise safety and performance. She stressed the importance of buying vehicle parts from reputable sellers to avoid falling victim to such scams.
The operation sends a clear message that authorities will take action against those involved in the illegal distribution of counterfeit goods.
