RAC data indicates that unexpected car repairs are costing drivers an average of £617 per year. 59% of drivers report experiencing these costs, with 37% facing financial difficulties in covering them.

Tyres are the most frequent unexpected expense (64%), followed by brake repairs (24%). 21% of drivers report suspension repairs, rising to 30% for cars aged three to ten years. Other common costs include exterior light fittings (15%), bodywork repairs (14%), and 12-volt battery replacements.

RAC Mobile Mechanics are increasingly utilised for repairs and servicing at customers’ homes or workplaces. Their top services in 2024 include electronic fault diagnostics (40%), brake repairs (18%), battery replacements (13%), and alternator and starter motor replacements (7% each).

The RAC highlights the importance of regular vehicle maintenance to minimise unexpected repairs. They also offer a service where RAC patrols tow broken-down vehicles to customers’ homes for subsequent repair by mobile mechanics. Customers can book online and spread repair costs using Klarna. All RAC Mobile Mechanics servicing maintains vehicle manufacturer warranties and residual values.

  1. It’s strange as you must get the data from rac or aa,im an auto electrician and the most common parts I see failing is nox sensors or adblue pumps/tanks,lowest cost been £250 plus labour then the tanks are regularly over 2k

  2. Funny that, as the RAC are pushing their own mobile repairs onto motorists rather than to garages, so they have a vested interest in mobile repairs
