Charity worker fuming after donated van fails its MOT

Transit given to mental health group live on Channel 5 show but organisation soon found that it was unroadworthy

Charity worker fuming after donated van fails its MOT

A Ford Transit van which was donated to a charity by an ‘undercover millionaire’ on a TV show has been condemned as ‘rust bucket’, the Metro has reported.

The van was presented to Millie Corke’s organisation on Channel 5 show ‘Do the Right Thing’

The charity, Worry Tree Cafe, had hoped to use is as a ‘Worry Wagon’ to visit vulnerable people needing support in rural areas.

However an MOT revealed that the 22-year-old Ford Transit van was covered in rust.

Millie said: “I burst into tears when I saw it.

“We had this gift and suddenly it was taken away.

“We had given all these people hope.

“People were asking us to come and see them, and all of a sudden we couldn’t do anything.”

The Worry Tree Cafe featured on the first episode of the second series, which aired on January 6.

It saw Terry George, who previously appeared on Channel 4’s The Secret Millonaire, announce the donation live on air.

A spokesman for Do the Right Thing said: “The van was sourced and adapted in good faith by Terry George and he has agreed to cover the cost of any essential work plus the advisory work, as necessary, so that The Worry Tree team are completely happy with it.

“However, if the Worry Tree Café decides it no longer wants to keep it, Terry is of course willing to donate the cost of the van to the charity.”

Ungrateful….Rust is nothing that can’t be fixed, for them to say they “no longer want the van” shows how much gratitude they had for it in the first place.

If one has been in the motor industry long enough and know the Ford Transit (especially if it’s twenty-two years old) will tell you that, not only does it rust, it rots.

Some times we are all very quick to judge.

Look at that Womans compo face !!

Its disgusting that they try to humiliate a genuine guy who was trying to help a charity. He offered to pay for all the work and they refused asking for the cash instead. I hope all their donations dry up.

I see her point of view. She isn’t a mechanic. She was given a van that she expected to be roadworthy. The programme is called ‘Do The Right Thing’. I wouldn’t donate a vehicle to a charity that wasn’t roadworthy or safe without explaining faults in advance. She probably works as a volunteer. She spoke her mind. The Secret Millionaire probably didn’t know the van was a rust bucket either. But I’m heartened that he agreed to either ensure the charity gets a safe van for their good work or the financial equivalent. I was sad to see Clive, Andrew, Matthew and Phil being so quick to judge against her. Have a heart guys.

Bearing in mind that this is a trade website it would have been interesting to know what items were failed at MOT.

    Poor journalism !
