25-year-old Jeremy Blake of Saltash, Cornwall, says he received a parking fine as a result of the clocks going back on Sunday, 29 October, reports Metro.

Blake said: “I was very confused and surprised when I received the ticket as I knew I had paid for one hour and had been less than one hour.”

Blake was originally confused to see the fine stuck to his windscreen, as he knew that he had been back within the one hour that he had paid for; despite the ticket showing that he had stayed twenty minutes too long.

He then remembered that the clocks had gone back that day: “I couldn’t work out immediately what had happened but once I had got home and back-tracked my day and what time I had left the house, then I was able to work out something was up.”

Although Jeremy provided evidence in the form of his ticket for a toll bridge he had crossed, which showed he had entered the city after the time on the ticket, and therefore the machine was wrong, he was told the fine still stood.

‘Thoroughly’ investigated

“They replied saying that everything figured out and that I had been ten minutes outside the times of the ticket.

“They basically took nothing that I had told them into consideration whatsoever, I called the council and they explained that every appeal is investigated thoroughly to make sure there is a correct outcome.

“I however find it hard to believe that they had investigated the appeal ‘thoroughly’ when I’m the one in possession of the evidence of when I crossed the bridge and left my house and they never asked for it.

“I’m hoping more people have been in the same circumstance for the council to realise their mistake.”

Cabinet member for transport for Plymouth City Council, Steve Ricketts, commented: “We are unable to comment on individual cases, however all of our parking machines are automatically synced to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) so when the clocks go forward or back, the time on the parking machines automatically change accordingly.”
