33-year-old Mark Mathers died following an incident at Specialist Cars Volkswagen in Aberdeen on Saturday.

An Inverurie father has died after sustaining serious injuries at a Volkswagen dealership in Aberdeen in an incident involving a roller door.

Mark Mathers, 33, was rushed to hospital on Saturday at about 9am after he was seriously injured at Specialist Cars Volkswagen on Craigshaw Crescent.

The contractor, who had been working on a roller door, died on Tuesday afternoon.

Police have launched a joint investigation with Aberdeen City Council into his death.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will not be involved in the inquiry.

Detective inspector, Norman Stevenson said: “Our thoughts are with Mark’s family at this very sad time.

“An investigation is ongoing in conjunction with Aberdeen City Council, and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course.”

Speaking earlier this week, his family said: “We are devastated by what has happened.

“Mark will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”

Tragic loss

A spokeswoman for Specialist Cars Volkswagen said: “We are all saddened to hear about the tragic loss of Mark Mathers following the incident at our premises on Saturday morning.

“Our thoughts are with Marks’ family and friends at this terribly difficult time.

“I would like to commend all our colleagues on site for their quick action and response.

“We are providing counsel and support to all individuals involved.

“We will continue to work with the relevant authorities.”

Industrial, commercial and roller shutter doors have been known to cause a number of serious and fatal accidents, according to the HSE.

Just last year the owner of Fearnley Motors in Colchester approached GW to urge workshops across the country to check the condition of their shutter doors after one of his employees narrowly escaped injury.

we had a lucky escape with roller shutter drive chain snapping the door drops like a stone scary !!!
    we fitted a new chain
we then were so rattled that it could have killed somebody or seriously damaged a vehicle we made a safety device
we took the door to the top and secured it we made two round pins and drilled some holes through the door
guide so pins could be inserted through we welded some flat steel to end of pins
so they could be inserted from floor safely
they were inserted every time the door went up from then on
if the chain snaps door can only move a few milimeters
cost a couple of quid time involved an hour
    peace of mind pricelees
    best regards
