The owner of a London independent garage has taken to fitting ‘anti-theft’ devices in a bid to protect his customers from having their catalytic converter stolen.

Manjula Jayamaha, owner of Harrow-based Mr Car Max, charges £200 for wire cage protection, according to the Daily Mail.

He said: “We have fitted about 40 of the cages over the last eight months.

“They take about two hours to fit.

“It was just an idea I have come up with.”

It comes amid a 1,700 per cent rise in catalytic converter thefts in the worst affected areas last year.

In London last year there were 2,894 catalytic converter thefts compared with 1,674 the year before.

Kent has also been hit, with 215 offences recorded in 2019 and 51 in 2018.

Cambridgeshire, Nottinghamshire and West Yorkshire have also seen big increases.

I’m not sure. Looking at the picture if the thieves can cut a cat off they can also cut that wire mesh off. Might work as a minor deterrent but that’s about it as far as I can see.
