A motorist has accused Halfords of crashing his £19,000 Ford Focus ST in one of its workshops and not telling him.

Lee Bennett had dropped his car off at one of the chain’s autocentres for a service but after paying the £140 bill and returning home he noticed scratches on the front bumper and realised that the bonnet would no longer shut properly.

Turning to his dashcam, Lee said he watched his Focus launch forward inside the garage, crunching a tool box and rattling tools on the work bench.

“I realise accidents happen but for Halfords to try to keep it secret is appalling,” he said.

“When I went around next morning they seemed non-plussed and told me to contact customer services.

“It will cost £600 to £1,000 to fix.”

A Halfords spokesman said: “On this occasion we’ve clearly fallen short of our high standards.”

The firm has since refunded the full cost of its work.
