A man who crashed into a garage on Hawthorn Close, south-west Hitchin, was retrieved by emergency services after becoming trapped inside his black Vauxhall Astra.

A spokeswoman for Herts police said that the car appeared to have hit a fence before smashing into the garage, where the driver became trapped, reported the Comet.

Mark Burgess, watch commander from Hitchin fire station, said: “A car had been driven through a fence and was embedded in a garage.

“The structure was deemed unsafe.

“However, working alongside colleagues from the East of England Ambulance Service, East Anglian Air Ambulance and Hazardous Area Response Team, a rescure was carried out in a safe manner.

“The elderly gentleman involved was conveyed to hospital by the ambulance service.”

An ambulance service spokesman commented: “We have no information on the man’s injuries, but he was conscious on the crews’ arrival.”

The man, thought to be in his 80s, was taken to Stevenage’s Lister Hospital for treatment.
