Independent garages now have a legal obligation to follow the government’s coronavirus guidelines, the Independent Garage Association (IGA) has told its members.
An IGA spokesperson said: “The UK’s COVID alert has risen to four and COVID-secure guidelines are now legal obligations, so you could face fines of up to £10,000 if your staff do not wear face coverings or don’t self-isolate when required.
“The Prime Minister has stated that these restrictions may be in place for six months, so don’t forget that COVID-19 compliance audits are still available to you as a benefit of membership to help you ensure you are meeting requirements.”

The IGA’s COVID-19 compliance programme provides members with guidance on safe working practices to prevent coronavirus transmission.
The spokesperson added: “If you need guidance on making your garage COVID-secure, and want to demonstrate to customers that your garage is safe and compliant, one of our field team can pay you a visit to help you to achieve compliance in line with government advice.”
Upon successfully meeting government guidelines, IGA members will be sent a ‘poster of compliance’.
IGA members that have already completed an audit say it has given customers and staff the confidence to carry on as normal.
To book a COVID audit or for more information, IGA members can call 0845 305 4230 or email [email protected].
