Statement: Garage Wire aims to keep trade connected during tough times

Garage Wire managing director, James Onions outlines how we will support the UK’s independent aftermarket.

After last night’s update many of us will feel dizzy after the week coronavirus really hit home.

Personally and professionally, we all face unprecedented changes, with huge uncertainties.

The note below is simply to let you know what we’ll be aiming to do in the weeks ahead as things settle into a ‘new normal’.

We believe Garage Wire can, and therefore must, have a duty to provide an important anchor point of both normality and up-to-the-minute trade information to readers in the difficult times ahead.

We aim to support our important and resilient UK independent motor trade by doing the following:

  1. Operating responsibly in line with all government advice, we are fortunate that we can work remotely.
  2. Using our Friday news bulletin to issue Coronavirus-related updates
Our supplier customers will be looking to Garage Wire to communicate their operational capabilities, service levels and plans as things develop. We will therefore issue these updates in a regular and timely fashion.
  3. Retaining the Tuesday news bulletin for ‘business as usual’ trade news, technical and business pieces.
This is not to make light of problems, or bury our heads in the sand, but rather about meeting garage needs for some normality. In time being able to read, reflect and plan can be an important part of bouncing back strongly as a sector. We will keep looking ahead and aiming to improve the content available to you as we move through this.
  4. Sharing real garage experiences in the Friday news bulletin
We will be looking actively to report on and share your experiences wherever we can.

We know that individual decisions on how to keep operating businesses will be personal ones, depending on circumstances and government policy.

We anticipate there will be many examples of the entrepreneurial thinking, community spirit and agile business adaptation that are the hallmarks of the exceptional UK independent garage trade that keeps cars moving.

Sharing your stories can help both the morale and fortunes of others.

There’s no better time to pool our resources and share these sector stories to benefit us all.

Garage Wire too faces uncertainty as we’re reliant on our supplier customers supporting us in bringing the news to you.

Read, react and comment – just as you always have

So, all garages can do to help us is: read, react and comment – just as you always have!

Business isn’t top of people’s priorities currently.

There are bigger challenges and concerns.

But supporting and sharing information can help short term and put us on the best footing to spring back when the crisis passes and opportunities arise.

We hope our readers and their families stay safe and well as we all take painful but necessary measures to reduce the transmission of this virus.

Good luck, best wishes and please keep reading.

Thank you for the communication, very disappointed that DVSA have been unusually quiet & have made no contact with advice for testing stations, we are currently open as until DVSA suspend testing, people require an MOT. Interesting the fact they have looked after their staff by suspending HGV & PSV testing.
We are a small rural garage with no passing trade so we are taking the utmost precautions, closed down the waiting area & using alcohol sprays & gloves. Hopefully we can carry on serving the public as long as possible.

Hi Nigel, Garage Wire has requested an update from the DVSA and we’ll report on any responses as and when we receive them. As of this morning, we understand that testing stations may stay open if they wish. Latest information is here: https://garagewire.co.uk/news/associations/dvsa/breaking-carry-on-testing-says-dvsa/

First of all there is no work secondly if I could work suppliers are closed or have no parts in stock which makes a farce of keeping motor factors supplied
