Clutch and brake specialist, National Auto Parts advises technicians on some of the common faults concerning clutch slip and how to solve the issue.
Clutch slipping is one of the most common clutch related concerns and occurs when there is not enough friction.
FAULT | POSSIBLE CAUSES | REMEDY |
Clutch is running partly disengaged. | Release bearing clearance too tight.
Too much friction in release mechanism. Slave cylinder not returning. Cable binding/partially seized. |
Reset adjustment to specified setting.
Repair or replace.
Renew defective parts. Renew defective parts. |
Clutch plate facings worn out (Fig. 1). | Normal wear life.
Driver misuse, resting foot on pedal whilst in motion or riding clutch. Sticking release mechanism.
Clamp load of cover insufficient or weak spring. Flywheel refaced on wearing surface only. Clutch fitted to worn/grooved flywheel. Insufficient free play in release mechanism. |
Renew clutch.
Renew clutch.
Check release mechanism, cable/hydraulic system. Renew defective parts. Renew clutch. Machine cover mounting surface by same amount. Machine or replace flywheel Adjust to specified setting. |
Clutch facings contaminated with grease/oil (Fig. 2). | Excessive use of spline grease during fitting.
Oil leakage from gearbox or engine oil seal. |
Clean off all surfaces and renew clutch.
Cure oil leak, replace complete clutch. Ensure all parts are clean. |
Pressure plate broken into segments (Fig. 3). | Overheated through prolonged use when slipping. | Fit new clutch. |
Noisy, or worn spigot bearing (Fig 3). | Worn, or missing bearing.
|
Replace spigot bearing. |
Uneven driven plate wear (Fig. 4). | Flywheel face worn/grooved. | Renew defective parts, fit new clutch.
|
Broken driven plate linings (Fig. 5). | Damaged when fitting. Incorrect driving practice. | Renew clutch. |
Flywheel damaged or out of true. | Machining error when refinishing flywheel. | Machine or replace flywheel. |
