The DVSA is urging vehicle owners to check their vehicle is safe before setting off as schools begin to reopen.

Owners are warned that vehicles which have not been used frequently can face some common problems and suggests they should visit their garage for a professional check.

Drivers are encouraged to make basic checks before making a journey, including tyre tread and pressure, screen wash level and lights.

Fresh DVSA data shows that between April and December 2020, over 650,000 defects related to windscreen washers/screenwash and nearly 1.3m defects related to tyre tread.

The MOT Testing Service saw a 102 per cent increase in the number of tyres that were obviously under-inflated compared to the same period (April – December) in 2019.

The number of tyres with deep cuts has increased by 8.2 per cent, seriously defective or missing headlamps are up by five per cent and slightly defective headlamp reflectors or lenses saw a three per cent rise.

DVSA’s head of MOT policy, Chris Price, said: “As schools return, some motorists will need to use their cars more often than they have been recently.

“With more traffic on the road, we want to help everyone to keep their vehicle safe to drive.

“That’s why we’re urging all motorists to carry out some simple, visual checks before they get on the road again.

And for those who are unsure about any issues, we recommend a professional check at a local garage for peace of mind.

“Although schools are going back, we encourage everyone else to continue to stay at home, except for essential journeys.”

Yes what a good idea BEFORE schools open
Will then knock the “can you do 10am got school run”
And knocks on the head “need it back 2pm for the school run”

Will also help a little with “my kid yakked on the back seat this morning “

Be handy if the sprog seats were removed as well
