Improper installation risks fines and insurance issues

Dash cam missteps could cost drivers

UK drivers are being warned about the potential fines and insurance complications from incorrect dash cam installation.

Motorists could face up to £1,000 in fines if dash cams are not properly installed. The warning from automotive experts highlights the risks of connecting a dash cam directly to the USB port or cigarette lighter in older car models.

Motor Match experts stated: “Failing to notify your insurer about a wired dash cam can be seen as non-disclosure of important information. This might lead to a rejected claim in the event of an accident and affect future insurance premiums.”

Incorrect dash cam installation could result in significant fines and breaches of the Highway Code. Motor Match further noted that hard wiring alters the vehicle’s electrical system and is considered a modification.

Sharing dash cam footage on social media could infringe privacy laws and disrupt legal proceedings. A recent Freedom of Information request revealed a 77% increase in dash cam submissions to traffic police between 2021 and the end of 2023.

Andrew Davies, spokesperson for iCompario, emphasised how dash cams are “vital” to improving road safety. He stated that they can prevent false claims, lower insurance and ensure those driving dangerously are held accountable.
