New MOT test centre faces further delays

Contract termination delays opening of Hydebank facility, impacting testing capacity

New MOT test centre faces further delays

The opening of a new vehicle test centre in Northern Ireland has been delayed once again, further impacting the backlog of MOT tests. The Hydebank facility, originally scheduled to open in 2022, was expected to alleviate testing capacity issues and reduce waiting times.

However, the Department for Infrastructure has terminated its contract with the vehicle testing equipment company, delaying the opening of the new centre. This decision follows legal proceedings initiated by the company, Worldwide Environmental Products Inc.

The termination of the contract will not affect vehicle testing at the existing 15 test centres, as they operate under a separate contract. The department is now undertaking a new procurement process, which is expected to take several months.

This delay is a setback for efforts to address the growing backlog of MOT tests in Northern Ireland. The additional capacity provided by the new centre was anticipated to improve the efficiency of the testing system and reduce waiting times for vehicle owners.

The Infrastructure Committee has expressed concern over this development, and it remains uncertain when the new test centre will be operational. The delay will likely continue to impact vehicle owners who require MOT tests.
