UK drivers are being warned that failing to report a minor bump or scratch could land you in hot water. Revive! Auto Innovations has seen a 78% rise in repairs for hit-and-run damage, highlighting the increasing issue.
The Road Traffic Act requires drivers involved in any incident causing damage to stop and exchange details or report it to the police within 24 hours. Ignoring this can lead to fines up to £5,000, 10 penalty points, or even court proceedings.
Mark Llewellyn, Managing Director at Revive!, emphasises driver awareness: “Many drivers are unaware that even minor scratches require them to stop and swap details. Failing to do so can have serious consequences.”
Revive! advises the following steps in case of a minor accident:
- Stop in a safe location, regardless of the damage.
- Exchange details with the other driver, including names, contact information, and insurance details.
- If exchanging details isn’t possible, report the incident to the police within 24 hours.
Parking manoeuvres are a common culprit for these minor collisions, leading to frustration for many drivers. Crowded car parks create situations where irresponsible drivers might escape unnoticed after causing damage.
Brannan Coady, CEO of YourParkingSpace, highlights the role of technology: “Car park operators are investing in CCTV and automatic number plate recognition to hold irresponsible drivers accountable for causing damage.”
These measures aim to create safer parking environments and protect responsible motorists from bearing the financial burden of repairs.
