OSRAM Automotive celebrates a century of innovation in vehicle lighting

ams OSRAM, a leading automotive lighting manufacturer and inventor of the BILUX® twin-filament headlight bulb, is celebrating 100 years of excellence in the automotive sector.

Throughout its history, OSRAM Automotive has been at the forefront of revolutionary developments, including the early adoption and refinement of halogen technology and the NIGHT BREAKER® LED, the first street-legal LED replacement bulb. This commitment to innovation, coupled with a focus on quality, a broad product portfolio, and strong customer partnerships, has established ams OSRAM as the global market leader in automotive lighting.

The history of OSRAM Automotive began in 1925 with the unveiling of the BILUX® bulb in Berlin, a pivotal moment for road safety as it allowed drivers to switch between high and low beam. This marked the start of a century of continuous innovation in vehicle lighting.

Adam Wu, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Automotive & Specialty Lamps division of the ams OSRAM Group, emphasised the company’s visionary DNA and its role in driving technological progress in automotive lighting. He pledged that OSRAM, as the market leader, will continue to pioneer advancements in the field.

Key milestones in the company’s history include the development of “OSRAM-D” bulbs with increased light output in the 1930s, pioneering halogen technology in the 1960s, and co-developing D1 xenon and H7 halogen bulbs in the 1990s, which propelled OSRAM to global leadership. The launch of the NIGHT BREAKER® range in 2007 catered to specific driver needs, and the introduction of the first street-legal NIGHT BREAKER® LED retrofit bulb in 2020 marked another significant achievement. The NIGHT BREAKER® LED range has since expanded to cover various vehicle types and has been approved in numerous countries.

Beyond lighting, OSRAM Automotive has expanded into the vehicle maintenance and equipment sector through innovative products and the acquisition of RING Automotive in 2019, broadening its portfolio to include battery and tyre maintenance equipment and dashcams.

ams OSRAM remains committed to its partners through initiatives like the Trust program for verifying original parts, the Vehicle Bulb Finder, and the “Man in the Van” direct workshop support. As it celebrates its 100th anniversary, ams OSRAM will continue to introduce new products in retrofit solutions, battery maintenance, and inspection lighting under the campaign “To be continued. Making you road ready since 1925.”
