Tuf Treads, a prominent Welsh tyre service provider, is set to open a new facility in Carmarthenshire dedicated to re-treading old tyres. Located at the Cross Hands Strategic Employment Site, the new factory will utilise advanced manufacturing technology to produce premium re-treaded tyres from worn-out ones, diverting them from landfill. This initiative is expected to create 30 new jobs.
The project is backed by £400,000 from the Welsh Government’s Economy Futures Fund and £220,000 from its Circular Economy Funding.
Rebecca Evans, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, stated that the facility will fill a market gap for Tuf Treads, noting that each re-treaded truck or bus tyre saves up to 30kg of rubber, 20kg of steel, and 60kg of CO2 from landfill. She emphasised that supporting such “innovative and sustainable” business practices aligns with the government’s aim to foster a greener economy and create skilled jobs for the future.
Dan Rees, Director at Tuf Treads, expressed gratitude for the Welsh Government’s contribution to their £3 million-plus investment. He highlighted that the new factory will establish them as a leading manufacturer of re-treaded tyres in Wales, while also creating skilled local jobs and supporting the Welsh economy. Rees also underscored the initiative’s role in helping Wales achieve its net-zero commitments by recycling used tyres.
