Police in Coventry have seized a BMW after discovering that one of its tyres was so worn that the cord was visible. The vehicle was initially stopped by officers from the Holbrooks, Radford, Sherbourne, and Bablake neighbourhood team for having no tax.
Further checks revealed that the driver was also not insured to drive the vehicle. A physical inspection of the car then uncovered the dangerously poor condition of the tyre.
A spokesperson for the police team stated that the BMW was seized for “a number of motoring offences” and that the officers conducted condition checks which confirmed the tyre was in a poor state.
In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth for a car tyre is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Driving with tread below this depth can lead to a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. If all four tyres are found to be illegal, the driver could face a fine of up to £10,000 and lose their licence. Driving with bald tyres could also invalidate an insurance claim.

So it didn’t get seized for the tyre, it got seized because the driver wasn’t insured. Why write misleading headlines?
