Cross Street Garage has acquired and reopened Haskins Garage in Wroughton, saving the site from potential demolition for housing. The long-established business, located on the corner of High Street and Sun Lane, had been identified in the Wroughton Neighbourhood Plan as a suitable location for 13 new homes back in 2018, though these plans did not proceed.

In February, when Cross Street Garage’s managing director, Sat Nijjar, learned of Haskins Garage’s impending closure, he visited the site to offer support to the staff who were facing redundancy. He ultimately made an offer to purchase the business to ensure it remained an operational garage. The sale was finalised at the end of July.

“The former proprietor expressed great satisfaction that the premises would continue to serve the community in this capacity,” Mr Nijjar said.

Cross Street Garage has retained a number of Haskins’ employees, aiming to maintain customer trust and continuity. The rebranded site, which officially opened on 1 September, will keep some of the original Haskins name and signage to honour its history.

This acquisition adds to the Cross Street Group’s portfolio, which includes garages at Transfer Bridges, Thames Avenue, Old Town, and Gipsy Lane, in addition to a taxi rank and used car sales. The family-run business, which has been operating for over 50 years, recently also purchased Greenmeadow Commercial Services in Stratton. The group now employs more than 100 people.
