KYB unveils new environmentally friendly hydraulic fluid

KYB has developed a new environmentally friendly hydraulic fluid called SustainaLub™, designed to replace conventional petroleum-based oils in shock absorbers. The new fluid, which is both carbon neutral and recyclable, is set for a full market release in 2026.

Shock absorbers rely on hydraulic oil to stabilise a car’s movement. While conventional fluids are often petroleum-derived, SustainaLub™ aims to eliminate these environmental risks. The new fluid is made from a naturally derived base oil that absorbs CO2 during the cultivation of the plants used for its raw materials, contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions. It is also more than 60% biodegradable, according to the Eco Mark certification standard (OECD301).

KYB states that the new fluid improves both manoeuvrability and stability and enhances the feel of its products, such as its Prosmooth® shock absorbers. The company has a unique in-house design process for hydraulic oil recipes, and all new products undergo rigorous testing at the KYB Development Centre in Japan.

The performance and durability of SustainaLub™ have been verified in real-world applications, including vehicles in the All Japan Rally Championship JN-2 class and a LEXUS ROV Concept hydrogen-powered vehicle.

According to KYB, replacing petroleum-based oil in its shock absorbers with the new hydraulic fluid could save up to 15.6 million litres of oil per year. The company plans to apply this technology to all of its hydraulic products in the future to help achieve a sustainable mobility society.
