A garage in Croydon claims to be losing over £500 a month due to what it calls the borough’s “strictest” parking zone. The N2 controlled parking zone (CPZ) on Canterbury Road, Thornton Heath, enforces parking from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, a schedule many residents and businesses consider “unfair” and “unrealistic”.

Ken Thomas, who runs Crypton Autos on Canterbury Road, says the fines incurred by his customers are directly harming his business. “It can be five minutes to 8pm, and we will still get a ticket. It’s disgusting,” he told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS). He added: “I had a guy come in who wanted me to change a light bulb by the road, and by the time we took the car apart, they came around and gave him a ticket. We just need something more realistic.”

Residents also express frustration with the long hours, which they say make it difficult for family and friends to visit without risking fines. Lorna Davis, who has lived in the area for 39 years, says, “8pm is too late for my mum to come over and see me.”

Doreen Dias has been petitioning Croydon Council for a review since 2022. She argues, “We only get one day free because the traffic wardens don’t work on Christmas Day.”

The council has not committed to a new consultation, citing a high number of petitions and limited resources. However, Thornton Heath councillor Stuart King stated, “What we are frustrated about is that we have been going back and forth with officers saying can you get on with this consultation, but they just seem to be wading through treacle.”

  1. As usual, it is all about money, where is the empathy gone? Instead of keeping using people, this will only drive away this man’s customers and his livelihood away
