Consultation opens on HGV, bus, and trailer MOT centre service charges

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has launched a public consultation on proposed changes to the service charges that Authorised Testing Facilities (ATFs) can apply for MOTs for heavy goods vehicles, buses, and trailers. The consultation proposes increasing the maximum service charge for the first time since 2010.

ATFs are privately-owned sites where DVSA assessors conduct vehicle tests. The ATF owners provide the premises and equipment and are permitted to charge a service fee to cover costs. The DVSA states that trade associations and ATFs have reported increased running costs, including utilities, rent, salaries, and equipment maintenance, which necessitates an increase in the service charge to ensure the viability of the testing network.

The DVSA is proposing to increase the maximum charges for a test to:

  • HGVs: from £55 to £70
  • Trailers: from £40 to £50
  • Buses and coaches: from £70 to £90

The proposed increases are lower than the rate of inflation since 2010. The DVSA believes the new charges will help ATFs cover rising costs and plan for future equipment needs.

The consultation is open until 21 November 2025. Interested parties can provide their views by filling out an online questionnaire.

A summary of the responses and the next steps will be published within three months of the consultation’s closing date.
