A Cattedown garage in Faraday Mill Industrial Park has been damaged by a fire that broke out overnight at Ocean City Autos on Cattewater Road at approximately 3.30 am on Wednesday, October 1.
Firefighters from across Plymouth and South Devon were dispatched to the scene, with the blaze eventually spreading to the adjacent R&H Vehicle Repairs premises. R&H bosses confirmed they were called around 4 am, noting their property suffered some minor internal damage, while the neighbouring garage sustained damage from both flames and smoke.
The fire was extinguished by 8 am, and the cause of the blaze is currently unknown, with an investigation taking place throughout the day to determine what happened.
The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service reported receiving a call from a passer-by who could see flames coming from the roof of a commercial unit.
The Service stated: “Crews from Greenbank and Camels Head were first on scene and quickly got to work with 2 Breathing Apparatus, 2 Hose Reel Jets and a Thermal Imaging Camera. The Incident Commander then requested an additional 2 pumps for personnel and crews were mobilised from Plymstock and Plympton as well as a Command Appliance from Totnes and further Officers.”
The fire affected two commercial units. The Service confirmed that “The buildings suffered 20% fire damage and 10% smoke damage.” The final equipment used totalled 10 Breathing Apparatus, 2 Hose Reel Jets, 1 Safety Jet, 2 Gas Monitors, and 3 Thermal Imaging Cameras. The incident has since been scaled back to one pump.
