Northern Ireland drivers waste £1.3 million on ‘no show’ MOTs

More than 36,000 drivers in Northern Ireland failed to turn up for their car MOT appointments over the last year, costing themselves a combined £1.3 million, according to new figures.

The data, compiled by CompareNI.com, shows that the missed appointments are deepening the crisis caused by an ongoing backlog of vehicle tests. The current charge for a car MOT in Northern Ireland is $\text{\pounds}38$.

The figures revealed that in the 12 months up to August 2025, a total of 36,104 drivers failed to show up for their booked slots. This represents a collective loss of £1,371,952 in fees paid for tests that did not take place.

A spokesperson for CompareNI.com stated that the high number of ‘no-shows’ is further restricting the availability of slots, which are already severely limited due to long waiting times caused by the backlog.

The ongoing issue has meant that some vehicles are being permitted to remain on the road with an expired certificate, provided they have a valid test appointment booked. However, the survey suggests that a substantial number of these crucial slots are being wasted.

The situation has been described by CompareNI.com as a financial loss for the drivers and a significant contributing factor to the lack of available appointment slots across the region.
