A reader of the Derbyshire Times has voiced their opinion on the need for stricter measures on exhaust emissions during MOT tests.
The reader expressed their belief that the MOT system should be much tougher on exhaust emissions, highlighting the importance of environmental considerations when it comes to vehicle maintenance and regulation.
The reader’s letter: “I definitely think the MOT system should be much tougher on exhaust emissions”, was published in the opinion section of the Derbyshire Times. And it reflects a growing public concern about the environmental impact of vehicle emissions and the role regulations can play in reducing this.
The letter highlights the ongoing discussion regarding the suitability of present day MOT testing in addressing environmental concerns, even though the article doesn’t go into detail about the reader’s recommendations for more stringent testing.
In a world where Net Zero is the buzzword of the day, this public feedback feeds the larger discussion about how to effectively balance the needs of vehicle performance, safety, and environmental sustainability.

Well if they do this little mean a lot of cars automatically fail as some were very borderline in the first place in the past and I think many people will just give up driving all together to the detriment of the economy. Will be inundated with cars that need so many new sensors and components and went be able to do all of them and the regular work as well.

Current test is a waste of time, it needs to be done whilst under load, either on road test or rolling road, revving in neutral for a few seconds proves nothing. Also the VW, Audi, Merc and BMW ‘cheat’ system needs looking into.

They are already tested to manufacturer limits. What more do they want. You can’t sensibly expect a vehicle to be cleaner than it was designed to when new.

current diesel emission test is next to useless, lots of cars with DPF and EGR deletes still get through, VOSA need to hurry up with the implementation of the new Particulate measuring tester
