The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has written to Keir Mather MP to open a dialogue about the financial issues facing independent garages due to the stagnant MOT fee. The IGA’s letter reinforces the urgent need for action on a fee that has not changed since 2010, despite rising operational costs and inflation.
The Association highlighted that without a review, many garages may have to reduce the priority of MOT testing, which could impact the availability of the service across the UK. The IGA has a history of engaging with the government on this issue and is now seeking to build on previous discussions to ensure continued progress.
Stuart James, Chief Executive of the IGA, stated: “It is essential that policymakers understand both the pressures and the pivotal role that independent garages play in maintaining safe and reliable motoring for UK drivers.” He added that by opening dialogue, the IGA is ensuring these concerns “remain firmly on the government’s agenda and that viable, long-term solutions are found.”
The IGA is calling for a formal review of the MOT fee and measures to support training and upskilling in the sector. These actions would allow garages to continue to invest in new technologies and provide safe, reliable, and affordable MOT testing.
James concluded: “The IGA will persist in lobbying government and working with MPs to ensure a sustainable outcome for independent garages. It is vital that urgent steps are taken to support this essential service, which underpins road safety and consumer confidence across the UK.”
