Autoelectro navigates classic car remanufacturing challenges amidst peak season

Sourcing quality components proves difficult for classic alternators, contrasting with modern vehicle complexities

The remanufacturer has revealed its latest new to range parts and references.

As the classic car season peaks, Autoelectro highlights the unique challenges in remanufacturing alternators for older vehicles. Unlike modern ECU-controlled or 48V alternators with complex electronics, classic units are simpler in design and operation, directly integrating into a vehicle’s electrical system.

Despite this simplicity, remanufacturing classic alternators presents difficulties, primarily in sourcing quality components. Harnek Bhogal from Autoelectro explains: “In 2025, the biggest challenge we have is sourcing quality components. With the decline of British manufacturing and fewer UK-based remanufacturers still operating, sourcing individual alternator components for older applications is extremely tough – it’s limited.” This issue is compounded by the rise of mass-produced, lower-quality copy products, which have reduced demand for genuine parts and pushed original suppliers out of the market.

Autoelectro’s experienced engineers, some with over 20-30 years at the company, are uniquely positioned to overcome these hurdles. The rotating electrics specialist, with roots in vintage motoring, also embraces modern solutions. Their WhatsApp technical support service has become a valuable resource, allowing engineers to identify products, assist with enquiries, and plan remanufacturing before a unit even arrives at their Bradford headquarters. This pre-assessment helps streamline production and increases the likelihood of successfully restoring even rare units.

Bhogal noted: “Our business thrives on efficiency. The ability to see a unit in advance and prepare for it before it lands on the production line is invaluable.” This proactive approach has allowed Autoelectro to sustain UK remanufacturing for nearly 40 years.

Autoelectro acknowledges the significant technological shift in car design, where modern alternators demand advanced testing equipment and software integration, leading to reduced part interchangeability. In contrast, classic units often had broad applicability across many models.

Despite these evolving complexities, Autoelectro remains committed to supporting both modern and classic vehicle markets, ensuring quality, reliability, and performance through its expertise and infrastructure.
