Autotech Training has become the first provider in Great Britain to roll out the National Tyre Distributors Association’s (NTDA) Licensed Electric Vehicle Tyre Technician (LEVTT) programme. This specialist training is designed to equip tyre technicians with the necessary skills to safely replace and repair tyres on electric and hybrid vehicles.
The course was officially launched this week at Automechanika Birmingham, marking a significant development for Autotech Training in its role within specialist EV training in the automotive sector.
With over 1.5 million electric cars now on UK roads, representing almost 5% of the country’s 34 million vehicles, the accelerating shift towards electric mobility necessitates that technicians understand the unique demands placed on tyres by these vehicles. EVs are often 20-30% heavier than their petrol or diesel counterparts due to large batteries, and their instant torque places significantly greater stress on tyres, potentially leading to faster wear and increased breakdown risk. Electric vehicles are estimated to be twice as likely to experience tyre or wheel-related failures compared to traditional vehicles.
Fitting incorrect tyres to an EV can result in quicker wear, increased road noise, reduced battery range, and a higher risk of tyre failure. Tyre manufacturers have developed specific tyres to handle these demands, but technicians require proper training to identify these differences and understand the associated risks.
Furthermore, electric and hybrid vehicles utilise high-voltage systems (often over 400 volts), posing safety risks if not handled correctly. Tyre technicians must understand these hazards and know how to work safely, including using non-conductive tools and insulated gloves.
The LEVTT course, designed for tyre technicians working on electric and hybrid vehicles, meets the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Level 1 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Awareness standards. The training covers different EV types, high-voltage system hazards, and safe working practices, including charging procedures.
Alistair McCrindle, Operations Director, Autotech Training, commented: “With electric vehicles becoming more common, this type of training is no longer optional – it’s essential for technician safety and customer protection. The LEVTT course provides the vital knowledge technicians need to stay safe and confident when working around these vehicles.”
