12-Volt battery market shifts towards start-stop technology

Ecobat Battery data reveals growing demand for AGM/EFB batteries as start-stop systems become standard

12-Volt battery market shifts towards start-stop technology

Understanding market trends is crucial for businesses in the automotive service and repair sector. As the UK’s largest battery distributor, Ecobat Battery provides valuable insights into the evolving 12-volt battery market. This knowledge allows them to advise customers on the shifting demand for replacement batteries.

Previously, traditional SLI (starter, lights, ignition) batteries dominated the market. However, the widespread adoption of start-stop technology by vehicle manufacturers prompted a shift towards AGM (absorbent glass mat) and EFB (enhanced flooded battery) batteries.

Initially, this change wasn’t reflected in the replacement market. In 2016, only 2% of Ecobat Battery’s sales were AGM/EFB, whereas by 2022, it reached nearly 25%. This trend continues with the increasing prevalence of start-stop technology. Currently, the sales split between SLI and AGM/EFB is 64%/36%.

Ecobat predicts the market will reach a 50/50 split between SLI and AGM/EFB batteries as early as 2025. However, AGM/EFB batteries boast longer lifespans, potentially leading to a decline in overall replacement volume despite their higher price point.

This shift in technology highlights the importance of workshops fitting the correct battery type for a specific vehicle application. Ecobat emphasises this point, citing VARTA’s recent decision to simplify their battery offerings based on technology (SLI, EFB, or AGM) rather than a “good, better, best” approach.
