Inside the catalytic converter with EEC

Have you ever wondered what's inside?

Inside the catalytic converter with EEC

European Exhaust & Catalyst – EEC explains exactly how the catalytic converter works and what’s inside in this new infographic.

The Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter is an element of the exhaust system, which transforms the polluting exhaust gases into non-polluting gases.

The Catalytic Converter coating Overview:

Components of coating Catalytic Converters:

Aluminium Oxide

•              Increase of surface area by a factor of approx. 10,000

•              High precious metal dispersion

•              Durability (temperature as well as poison resistance)

Cerium Oxide:

•              Oxygen storage and release under cycling exhaust conditions

•              Lambda – Window

Zirconium Oxide/Promoters:

•              Increase of temperatures stability

•              Catalytic active Precious Metals (Pt, Pd, Rh)

•              Substrate/ Monolith

•              Cordierite/ Metal

•              Volume/ CPSI/ Wall thickness

Selective Catalytic Reduction Technology, or SCR technology

The purpose of SCR technology is to enable reduction processes of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in an oxidising environment. It is referred to as “selective” because it uses ammonia as a reductant in a catalytic system to lower NOx levels. When the reducing agent and NOx combine, the pollutants are transformed into nitrogen, water, and trace amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), which are all-natural components of the air we breathe on a daily basis. Car-grade urea, sometimes referred to as Diesel Exhaust Fluid Blue, is typically the source of the reductant because it can hydrolyse quickly to create the oxidising ammonia in the exhaust stream. NOx reductions greater than 90% can be accomplished alone with SCR technology.

3 Way Catalytic Converter

For it’s correct operation, it is necessary that the mixture relation air fuel value is:

1 part fuel : 14.7 parts air (Stoichiometric Ratio), Lambda 1
