Commercial vehicle market decline offers opportunities for independents

Seven consecutive months of falling registrations creates service revenue opportunity for independent garages

Commercial vehicle market decline offers opportunities for independents

The sustained decline in the UK’s commercial vehicle (CV) market presents a significant opportunity for independent garages, according to the Eurorepar Car Service (ERCS) network. As businesses delay new fleet purchases, they are instead increasing investment in maintaining and repairing existing vehicles to extend their lifecycles.

Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that the UK light commercial vehicle market has contracted for seven consecutive months, with a 12.1% drop in the first half of 2025. This downturn affects all major segments, including a 14.8% decrease in large vans and a 20.9% fall in medium vans. SMMT attributes this to a tough economic environment and a lack of business confidence to invest.

This market shift means that independent garages are well-positioned to meet the increased demand for maintenance, repairs, and parts. Furthermore, the slow transition to electric vehicles (EVs), which currently hold only an 8.6% market share, ensures continued reliance on conventional powertrains and the traditional service expertise offered by independent workshops.

Neil Gibbs, head of network at ERCS, stated that independent garages have key competitive advantages, including local accessibility, cost-efficiency, and technical expertise across various makes and models. He is encouraging ERCS members to pursue fleet maintenance contracts, preventative programmes, and rapid response services to capitalise on this shift in business behaviour.
