FORVIA HELLA has developed customised full-LED rear lighting with their patented light curtain technology for Daimler Truck AG. This marks the first time this technology is being used in the bus segment.
The rear lamps, crucial for vehicle recognition in all weather conditions, now also serve as distinctive brand identifiers on the road. “A customised light signature in the rear lamps is becoming increasingly important in order to bring the brand identity to the road and stand out from the competition,” states Stefan van Dalen, Managing Director Lifecycle Solutions at FORVIA HELLA.
The light curtain’s modular design allows for unique light signatures tailored to different brands, showcasing FORVIA HELLA’s commitment to customisation and design flexibility. The technology’s large surface area, over 900 square centimetres, ensures visibility even in challenging conditions. “This runs around the corner of the rear of the vehicle… It was a challenge both during development and later in production to recreate the curvature precisely while at the same time illuminating the surface homogeneously,” van Dalen elaborates.
The rear lamp’s clear lens reveals 30 high-performance LEDs for the tail light, providing intense illumination using just 3.5 watts of power. The lamp also integrates other functions like brake light, direction indicator, reversing light, and rear fog light, all meeting European ECE or American DOT/SAE standards depending on the vehicle model.
