The automotive industry has been transitioning refrigerants to reduce their environmental impact. R134a, once the standard, has been phased out due to its high global warming potential (GWP).
R1234yf, introduced in 2011, has a lower GWP but is highly flammable. While not a direct replacement for R134a, it is used in new vehicle type approvals.
R456A, a non-flammable mixture, is being considered as a potential drop-in replacement for R134a. R513A, another mixture, is also under consideration and is classified as non-toxic and non-flammable.
R744 (CO2) is seen as an eco-friendly alternative but presents technical challenges for conversion from R1234yf or R134a systems. High operating pressures and safety concerns require new concepts for A/C service units.
Due to upcoming regulations, there may be a shortage of R134a refrigerant. This makes exploring drop-in replacements like R456A or R513A more important.
Using a refrigerant analyser is recommended, especially when servicing vehicles of unknown customers, to prevent equipment contamination from non-permitted substitutes.
