Motorists are being warned about a rise in “car cannibalism,” a trend where vehicles are stripped of parts for resale on the black market. According to Admiral Insurance figures, thefts of parking sensors have increased fourfold between 2023 and 2024, with steering wheels also becoming a target for criminals. This has contributed to a rise in illegal “chop shops.”

To protect against this type of theft, drivers are advised to park in secure locations whenever possible. Garages and private car parks are recommended for their security features, such as locks and CCTV. If a secure parking space is unavailable, parking in a well-lit, high-traffic area is suggested as it can help deter thieves. Parking a vehicle facing a wall is also a recommended tactic, as it makes it more difficult for thieves to access the front-end components.

It is essential to always lock your vehicle and take the keys with you, as failing to do so could result in an insurance claim being denied. Using a steering wheel lock can provide an additional layer of protection.

Marking vehicle parts can also help police identify stolen items and may deter thieves who are wary of traceable components. While recovery of stolen parts is unlikely, these precautions are the best way to protect a vehicle.

Mark Barclay, Head of Ecommerce at My Motor World, advises that taking precautions and having adequate insurance are the best ways to protect a car from cannibalism. He also suggests keeping a supply of spare parts at home to allow for a quicker repair if a vehicle is targeted.

  1. Keep a supply of spare parts at home??? Are you kidding!?
Yeah I’ll just keep a £600+ steering wheel at home incase it gets nicked.
Also if I buy that secondhand off eBay I’m fuelling the theft/ increasing the demand!

  2. Absolutely agree. Who is this man? What a crazy idea. I own a Corsa so I will buy a spare front bumper just incase or I own a new Audi so I will keep a spare £1400 radar in the garage “just incase”
What world do we now live in?
Prosecute and really punish. That would be a good deterrent???
