Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) says the firm is “back to doing what we do best” as production starts again following weeks of disruption due to a significant cyber attack.

The attack, which began on September 1, forced the company to cease production at its major Merseyside plant in Halewood and other international sites.

On Wednesday, the firm’s stamping operations in Halewood, Castle Bromwich, and Solihull resumed production. JLR also welcomed back 1,000 employees to its engine plant in Wolverhampton on Wednesday, with Range Rover production lines in Solihull set to restart on Thursday.

Luis Vara, JLR global manufacturing director, spoke of a “strong sense of unity and momentum” among production workers, who were instructed to work from home after the hack on August 31.

On Wednesday, he said: “Today marks a significant moment in our journey back to full vehicle production for our people, suppliers, customers and retailers as we begin the controlled, phased restart of our operations, starting with our Wolverhampton plant where we make engines for our luxury vehicles manufacturing in Nitra, Slovakia and our batteries assembly centre in the West Midlands.”

The cyber incident impacted sales, with JLR reporting a 17.1% decline in sales to 85,495 units between July and September year-on-year, and wholesale volumes collapsing by 24.2%.

To support its large supply chain, the government confirmed it would guarantee a £1.5 billion loan to JLR. Furthermore, JLR announced an extended support package that will see critical suppliers paid up to 120 days earlier than usual. Downing Street stated the incident had been “a concerning time for workers at Jaguar Land Rover and, of course, across the supply chain.”
