South Yorkshire Police have made three arrests after raiding a garage in Thrybergh, Rotherham, suspected of operating as a “chop shop.” During the operation on Thursday, officers discovered numerous car parts and engines believed to be from stolen vehicles.
A 45-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods, while a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft. The police confirmed that the “intelligence-led warrant” was secured thanks to information provided by the local community, which linked potential stolen vehicles to the garage on Oldgate Lane.
A “chop shop” is a location where stolen cars are dismantled, and their parts are then sold separately. Vehicle crime specialists are now working to identify and trace the recovered items.
Carl Goodwin of South Yorkshire Police in Rotherham, emphasised the significant impact of car theft on individuals. He stated: “It is vital that we work with other police forces to track stolen vehicles and dismantle these ‘chop shops’. I hope this sends out a strong message to those trying to profit from stolen vehicles that we will use all the tools and resources available to crack down on this kind of criminality.” Mr Goodwin also highlighted the crucial role of community information in uncovering such operations.
All those arrested have been bailed pending further enquiries. Anyone concerned about crime in their area is encouraged to contact the police on 101, or report anonymously via Crimestoppers.
