A recent nationwide survey by Fleet Assist, a UK network management provider, has provided a comprehensive insight into the challenges and opportunities facing the aftermarket industry. The study, which included over 5,200 garages and 650 mobile service units, found that garages are demonstrating resilience despite a demanding environment.

According to the survey, the biggest concerns for 89% of garages are general business overheads and technician availability. The growing presence of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) was also identified as a challenge, with the reduced service work content of these vehicles meaning garages need to increase job volumes to maintain profitability.

In terms of workforce diversity, the survey revealed that 80% of garages have a workforce that is more than two-thirds male, highlighting the ongoing need to attract a more diverse talent pool. However, there is a positive sign for the future, as over 23% of technicians are aged 24 or under, which is significantly higher than the 9% national average for this age group.

The industry also faces pressure to reduce lead times, with 81% of garages expecting them to remain the same or shorten, and 90% anticipating a similar pattern for repair times. Despite these pressures, there is optimism that technology, particularly connected vehicles, will lead to increased efficiency and a reduction in wasted time.

Finally, the survey indicated a high level of confidence (97%) in accessing ‘OEM Secure Gateways’ when a suitable diagnostics partner is available. It also revealed that 70% of Fleet Assist’s network requested more information on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, signalling a clear interest in increasing sustainability.

Nikos Kotrozos, Fleet Assist’s supply chain director, stated that the survey confirmed the “multiple challenges” garages face and emphasised the importance of supporting them.
