The number of drivers caught using unroadworthy vehicles in the UK has risen by 52% in the past year. Data analysis shows a total of 8,945 drivers received endorsements for defective tyres in 2024, a 44% increase from the previous year. However, the most significant rise was for drivers with defective brakes, with 1,190 people receiving penalty points—a more than six-fold increase from the 181 recorded in 2023.

A further 2,974 endorsements were issued for other vehicle problems, such as defective steering. The data indicates that nearly all regions of the UK saw an increase in these offences. The East Midlands recorded the largest jump, with an 87% increase in drivers receiving points for unroadworthy vehicles.

Nick Mullender, team leader for RAC mobile servicing and repairs, expressed concern about the figures. He stated that driving a defective vehicle needlessly puts other road users at risk and that every driver has a legal responsibility to ensure their car is roadworthy. He urged motorists to keep up with routine maintenance and get any issues checked by a qualified mechanic.

Chief Superintendent Marc Clothier of the National Roads Policing Operation also commented on the “shocking” figures, encouraging all drivers to perform routine checks on their vehicles before driving.
