Barron Automotive, a family-run garage in Huntly, remains at risk of closure despite efforts to reduce noise following neighbour complaints. Owners Bob Barron and Nikki Dunbar are in a planning dispute with Aberdeenshire Council, which refused retrospective planning permission for their Meadow Street premises earlier this year.
The garage, operating from a former church building since March 2022, faced enforcement action after neighbours raised concerns about “horrendous” noise, particularly from specialised work on racing cars. In response to the initial refusal, the business garnered over 1,200 petition signatures from supporters vowing to keep it open.
During an Aberdeenshire Council review body meeting on Friday morning, Barron Automotive presented its appeal. The garage confirmed it has removed noisy equipment, such as a dynamometer, and “curtailed” its high-performance racing car work. However, opponents maintained their objections.
The owner, Bob Barron, has previously expressed concerns that the closure threat jeopardises his daughter’s aspirations to take over the business and stated that no other suitable sites are available in Huntly.
After hearing the appeal, councillors decided to visit the site in person before making a final decision. Councillor Catherine Victor noted, “It’s somebody’s business and somebody’s livelihood,” indicating a desire for a thorough assessment. Councillors will conduct the site visit next week, with a subsequent meeting scheduled in the coming months to determine the garage’s future.
