Karl Farrar, a 49-year-old mechanic, sustained serious groin injuries in a workshop accident involving an out-of-control car. The incident occurred as he attempted to reverse a BMW estate into his garage. After applying the handbrake and exiting the vehicle, the car began rolling down the ramp.
CCTV footage shows Mr Farrar trying to stop the estimated 1,800kg vehicle, but he was pinned against a wall, then crushed again when a co-worker accidentally reversed the car further. Mr Farrar was left on the shop floor in agony and was subsequently rushed to Manchester Royal Infirmary. He remained in hospital for a week, with an MRI revealing soft tissue and nerve damage to his pelvic area and groin.
Mr Farrar, from Hyndburn, Lancashire, expressed concern about his injuries, stating that his “man bits were smashed to bits” and “unrecognisable.” He is uncertain about their full function but remains hopeful for recovery. He described the experience as “traumatic” and has been unable to watch the CCTV footage. He also mentioned that doctors initially discussed the possibility of losing his lower leg.
The mechanic later discovered the car had a handbrake issue. Despite his injuries, he noted he is recovering better than anticipated by medical professionals. He has shared the video to explain the incident to those who have inquired, acknowledging his attempt to stop the car was “dumb” but it all happened so quickly.
