Driver banned and ordered to complete unpaid work after performing 'doughnuts' near pedestrians

Mechanic identified via Instagram after dangerous driving at car meet

A mechanic who was filmed performing “doughnuts” around pedestrians at a car meet in Newport has been identified and prosecuted by police. Harry Aufiero was captured on video drifting a BMW alongside another car at Langland Park Industrial Estate on 7 July last year. Both vehicles had their number plates removed.

However, an off-duty police officer recognised the location from previous call-outs to large car meets. The video, found on Instagram, had tagged an account named ‘@harry.driftz’. Investigators then used other posts on this account to identify the BMW’s number plate, linking the vehicle to Aufiero.

Aufiero, 20, from Ecchinswell, Hampshire, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. The court heard he had no previous convictions and fully accepted responsibility for his actions, acknowledging that his driving could have resulted in serious injury. His defence noted his remorse and that his interim driving disqualification had already impacted his work as a qualified mechanic. His solicitor suggested his immaturity played a role in his decision-making.

Judge Celia Hughes described the manoeuvre as “highly dangerous” and commented that posting the video on Instagram “glamourised that behaviour.”

Aufiero received a 12-month community order, which includes 150 hours of unpaid work and 10 rehabilitation activity requirement days. He was also banned from driving for 12 months, must complete an extended re-test, and was ordered to pay £1,000 in court costs.

  1. Well done that Judge. If you want to drive in an anti-social and dangerous manner, then be prepared to accept the consequences.
