Nemesis Coachworks, a supercar repair shop located on Ringwood Road in Poole, is seeking planning permission from BCP Council to provide overnight accommodation for its staff. The company states that this initiative would help to retain skilled employees within the business.
Matt Annen of Pure Town Planning, acting as Nemesis Coachworks’ agent, explained the rationale behind the proposal. He noted that staff members who lack access to private vehicles would particularly benefit, as living on-site offers a secure and practical solution, eliminating long or complex commutes. This arrangement is expected to strengthen the business’s ability to retain skilled staff, thereby safeguarding employment levels. By reducing travel and accommodation expenses for employees, the proposal aims to increase their disposable income, contributing to an improved quality of life and overall well-being.
Mr Annen emphasised that the proposed accommodation would not result in any loss of commercial floor space or jobs. The area of the building designated for staff accommodation was previously redundant and empty. Its repurposing aims to facilitate business operations by making employment more accessible, especially for younger or lower-income staff members.
While acknowledging that staff accommodation is more commonly seen in sectors such as pubs or care homes, Mr Annen suggested that it is an “acceptable” provision within a light industrial unit. This move by Nemesis Coachworks reflects a growing consideration among businesses to offer unconventional benefits to attract and retain talent in competitive industries.
