Thieves are now stealing parcel shelves from cars in north London

A new crime trend has emerged in north London, with thieves targeting and stealing parcel shelves from parked cars. Residents in Primrose Hill, Kentish Town, and Highgate have reported waking up to find their car’s rear windscreens smashed and the parcel shelves missing. These items are believed to be targeted because they are quick to remove and can be sold online for as much as £150.

A 37-year-old Highgate resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, had his Mercedes broken into on 12th July at around 5.30 am. He said: “I got a notification to my phone saying that my car had been broken into. They smashed the windscreen and only took the parcel shelf.” He added that his mechanic told him that he had seen four of the same car with the same issue, and that people were “selling parcel shelves on eBay, and they were going out on a steal-to-order basis.”

Other cars reported to have been targeted in the area include Hyundais, Minis, Jaguars, and Vauxhalls. As a result, locals are now removing their parcel shelves and hiding them indoors at night, as replacements can cost hundreds of pounds.

The Metropolitan Police have provided advice on their online service, MetEngage, advising residents to park in private garages or well-lit, open spaces and to use car parks that are part of the Park Mark scheme.

The Highgate Society, a local residents’ association, noted that thieves are taking the parcel shelves to sell them online at prices significantly lower than the manufacturer’s price.
