Van owner battles DVLA after van wrongly registered as scrapped

A van owner from Aberdeenshire found his vehicle was wrongly registered as scrapped by the DVLA after a claims handling company made a mistake. The owner, whose van had recently passed two MOTs and was fully insured, was left unable to tax his vehicle and was told by the DVLA that an investigation would take at least six weeks, during which he could not drive it.

The issue arose when a claims firm confused the man’s van with a vehicle with a similar registration plate. Despite the van’s recent MOT passes being logged on the DVSA website, the DVLA had accepted the “scrapped” registration from the claims firm without notifying the registered keeper.

Initially, the DVLA gave the owner the name of a non-existent insurance company and told him to take up the issue with them. The owner eventually tracked down the correct claims company, which admitted the error. The article raises concerns that the DVLA relies on information from insurers without independently verifying it or alerting the vehicle’s owner.

The van has since been correctly recorded as roadworthy in the DVLA’s system, and the owner is legally back on the road. The claims company did not respond to a request for comment.
