Josh Daniels, a mechanic from Hull, has established a new garage business, Daniels’ Autoshop, on the Factory Estate, Hull, as a tribute to his late father, Glenn.
Glenn Daniels tragically took his own life last year at 54. Following this personal loss, Josh discovered his father had left an inheritance, which he decided to use to open a community-focused garage.
Having been a mechanic since the age of 13, Josh aimed to create a business that stood apart from typical garages, focusing on giving back to the community. Alongside standard MOTs, services, and repairs, Daniels’ Autoshop hosts weekly mental health evenings every Tuesday from 5 pm to 8 pm. These sessions offer a safe space for men to converse or relax, with plans to introduce mental health training for staff.
Josh explained his father was “too busy helping everybody else, taking everybody else’s weight but not his own.” He hopes the garage can support other men facing similar challenges, drawing from his own experiences with mental health after his father’s death.
In addition to mental health support, Daniels’ Autoshop provides a 20% discount for Blue Light Card holders. The business also actively supports Mysterious Minds, a charity assisting families who have lost loved ones to suicide, which had contributed to Glenn’s funeral. Josh emphasised that the business’s primary goal is to be genuine and supportive, rather than solely profit-driven.
