Sutton car wash fined for employing illegal workers

A car wash in Sutton has been fined for employing staff without the legal right to work in the UK. Woodstock Hand Car Wash Limited, which operates at the Stonecot MOT Services Car Sales site on 157 Epsom Road, was issued a penalty of £40,000.

The company was named in the government’s latest quarterly report, which lists businesses fined for illegal employment between 1 January and 31 March 2025. This report was released on 29 August.

Employers who knowingly hire individuals without valid permission to work in the UK can face up to five years in prison or an unlimited fine. This includes situations where a business had reason to believe an employee had expired leave, lacked permission to work, or provided false documents. Penalties can also be imposed on businesses that fail to conduct the necessary checks, such as verifying passports or Home Office paperwork.

The latest report also revealed that three businesses in Croydon were fined a total of £125,000 during the same period. The fines are part of the government’s efforts to enforce employment laws and prevent the exploitation of workers.

The Home Office publishes these updates every three months to ensure transparency and inform the public about enforcement actions in their local area.
